What does it involve? Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese
philosophy of learning how we can live in harmony with the
natural and man-made environments that we live and work in.
This means taking into account the elements of wind, rain,
cold and heat, but also the natural energy forces that exist
on this planet, and the conditions we create.
The literal meaning of 'Feng Shui' is 'Wind and Water'. It
has been said that 'it is the wind you cannot see and the
water you cannot comprehend'.
That is to say, when the wind blows we see the result of
the energy (for example, the leaves on the trees move), but we
do not see the wind.
Water has many qualities and many manifestations - from
being a quiet still lake to a roaring waterfall. Whether it
freezes or evaporates, the total amount of water remains the
same.
We may not fully understand the forces that direct water,
but we are certainly familiar with both the benefits and the
devastation that water can bring.
The fact that we can not see something or understand it
does not mean it does not exist. The force of gravity existed
before it was discovered by man!
Early in evolutionary time, people had to learn to survive
by working with rather than against the forces of nature.
These forces included not only the elements, such as, the sun,
wind and rain, but also the natural energy forces.
Feng Shui is a form of geomancy. Geomancy is the art of
understanding how to live in harmony with the earth.
Every culture has or has had a belief in working with a
form of geomancy. It is only in cultures that embraced the
industrial revolution that the knowledge of geomancy has been
lost.
So the learning of Feng Shui is a rediscovery of knowledge
lost by industrialised societies."
